While known mainly as an organist and composer of organ compositions, Louis Vierne composed for virtually all media except opera, including the symphony, mass, instrumental sonata, art song, piano and orchestra and solo piano works. His solo piano works are varied in style and mood, reflecting the various periods in his life like a musical scrapbook. This recording gives a cross-section of Vierne's most idiomatic, characteristic pieces, from the early "Autumn Impression" (Impression d'Automne" from Two Pieces melodious, to the later, more turbulent "In Bad Weather"," from the Twelve Preludes for Piano, op 36. Vierne emerges here as the late romanticist, in a personal style that also reflects the influences of Schumann, Liszt, Scriabin, and Rachmaninoff, among others.
